Cool pools: Plants for around the pool

They are becoming an icon of the Australian back yard and those of us blessed with enough space to have one will know there is nothing better than taking a dip in your own pool on a hot summers day.

But all too often once the pool is in we forget to add the finishing touches, ie. plants, to our new watery oasis, leaving the space feeling barren and a little too hot around the edges!

We’ve got a great list of plants that will work wonders around your pool and have it feeling like the perfect hide away in no time!

Trees:

It always pays to have a few taller, shadier plants around the pool to give a sense of enclosure and to bring the temperature down! Opt for trees that don’t need pruning and place them so that their canopy doesn’t over hang the pool itself. Deciduous trees can work well as they drop their leaves when the pool is getting the least use.

Trees you can use around your pool include

  • Magnolia grandiflora varieties
  • Olives
  • Blueberry Ash
  • Giant Bird of Paradise
  • Tilia Greenspire
  • Camelias
  • Citrus
  • Clumping bamboo
  • Tristaniopsis Luscious
  • Parrotia persica
